A Guide to Hurricane Preparedness in Northwest Florida

Sunset on the Boggy Bayou, Niceville FL

As residents along the coastline of Northwest Florida, it’s time for us to gear up for another hurricane season. The looming threat of Hurricane Beryl serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness.  We live in a beautiful place and enjoy the wonderful beaches and bays along the Gulf of Mexico. Living near such a mighty body of water comes with the necessity to respect that sometimes we have to yield to the Gulf’s power.  It is now Hurricane Season 2024 and cities like Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Navarre must take proactive steps to safeguard lives and property in the face of potential impacts from this powerful storm.

Hurricane Beryl, currently tracking in the Atlantic Ocean, has the potential to bring significant impact to the US.  Although the Northwest region of Florida may not be affected by Beryl, being aware of what it is doing and where it is going is something we must do. Remember, we are not in control, and as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 120 mph, Beryl poses a serious threat to coastal communities. Residents must be ready to respond swiftly and decisively to mitigate risks.

Key Steps for Preparedness:

  1. Monitor Updates: Stay informed about Beryl’s trajectory and expected landfall. Regularly check reliable weather sources like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the latest forecasts and advisories.
  2. Review Emergency Plans: Ensure that your family emergency plan is up to date and includes specific protocols for hurricanes. Review evacuation routes, emergency contacts, and essential supplies.
  3. Strengthen Property Defenses: Take proactive measures to secure your home and belongings. Install storm shutters, reinforce doors and windows, and clear outdoor spaces of potential projectiles.
  4. Emergency Kit Preparation: Assemble a comprehensive emergency kit that includes food, water, medications, first aid supplies, important documents, communication devices, and pet supplies.
  5. Heed Evacuation Orders: If local authorities issue evacuation orders, act promptly and follow designated routes to safety. Be prepared to leave vulnerable areas and seek shelter in designated evacuation centers.

Specific Tips for Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Navarre:

  • Fort Walton Beach: Prepare for potential storm surges by moving valuables to higher ground and securing loose items outdoors.
  • Destin: Check on neighbors, particularly elderly or disabled individuals, to ensure they have the necessary supplies and assistance.
  • Navarre: Stay informed about road closures and bridge conditions, and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

The threat of Hurricane Beryl underscores the critical need for preparedness in Northwest Florida, especially in cities like Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Navarre. By staying vigilant, proactive, and informed, residents can better protect themselves and their communities from the impact of severe weather events. Remember, it is better to be over-prepared than caught off guard in the face of a hurricane. For additional resources and guidance, visit your local county emergency management website.
